Good Morning!

So I woke up this morning with the desire to draw...which is good but is also a little weird for me. I haven't felt like that in a long time. When you're studying it in school and drawing becomes homework, you don't wake up going "I think I'm going to draw today." At least you don't when you're me. Drawing (like anything for that matter) becomes a chore if you really don't want to do it. That's why it is so important to pick and plan projects that you can be excited for. I learned that in my narrative illustration class. Didn't realize it till now but that is what that class taught me. I started the class illustrating something that I really wasn't excited for. It was horrible. I would dread every week a painting was due. That's not pleasant.

So this morning I decided that I wanted to draw and I did. This is the drawing I started with (it won't be the last thing I do today...I wanna try my hand at speed painting some landscapes :D ). There is a lot of stuff wrong with it but I still like it. I used some random reference I had on my computer leftover from a photo shoot we had last semester. I don't remember her name. I drew it using prismacolor pencils. I LOVE how they feel when you drag their tips across the paper in my sketchbook. I don't love them as much as I love ball point pen but I do love them.

PUI - Painting Under the Influence

I just realized that she's not actually sitting on anything. Anyway, I decided that I ought to get some digital painting practice in. This is from a drawing that I posted awhile back. I just searched my computer for a sketch and this was the first one I got. Its not the greatest but its not bad for painting under the influence. I had been out of commission for a few days since I got my wisdom teeth out on tuesday (OUCH). The only positive thing that came out of the experience was a few funny quotes that my mother just LOVES to share with people. Gini-on-drugs in one of our greatest sources for family entertainment. I'm glad its done and over with though. They put me to sleep and by the time I was coherent three days later, all I had to show for it was a bruised jaw. Which is still bruised. Lovely. I'm so excited to start working at the bank tomorrow...not.

The Best 50 I've Ever Spent...

I found it on CraigsList. I was so excited!!!! It's a light table that doubles as a drafting table. I couldn't believe it. This sucker is going to save me quite a bit of trouble. I've been thinking about making a light box for a long time now and this actually saved me money. Plus it tilts the way a drafting/drawing table does. I'm definitely happy with it. I'm going to have to do some traditional stuff just to celebrate :)

Here is the result of today's 20 min...well, 20+ min. I had to finish this one. I like the gesture. It kind of makes me okay with the iffy anatomy. Kind of.

I have decided that I am going to be better at posting stuff on my blog. I'm hoping that it will help me keep up sketchbook. I realized that I haven't been drawing enough since I've been home. To remedy this I went out and bought myself a timer. I decided that everyday I was going to sit down with my timer and handy dandy 100% recycled sketchbook and draw for at least 20 min.

So far this has proved to be more difficult than I thought it would be. I find that I am constantly being distracted by other things. I'm amazed at how appealing the most mundane things can be sometimes. Anyway, I'm putting my foot down. This is going to happen. I've also decided that I am going to do at least one 45 min speed painting a week. I need to improve and not drawing or painting this summer is not going to help me.

Here's a sketch from today's twenty min. I'm not really happy about it but here it is. Voila!

Okay, so I did this for the website that I'm building. I've been sketching a lot lately and I liked this one...a lot. As I was painting it my roommate asked if it was me, thus the title.

Okay so every now and then (when you should be paying attention in class) you pull out a sketch that you really like. This would be one of those sketches. I really like it...why? No clue. I just do. A lot of times sketches are just sketches that don't actually mean much but when you get one that you really really like, its probably about the equivalent of acing a test that you didn't think you could. That's my random thought for the day.

First REAL Illustrations

These are the pieces that I did that made me realize that I wanted to do illustration. Till that point I'd been thinking of doing graphic design but I decided that I liked telling a story more than text and labels.

The first one is my version of the three little pigs and is probably my favorite piece ever and I did it for my design and color class. The second is the little girl playing in the leaves...also done for design and color. I REALLY really like my little pig.

Wow, I haven't posted in forever. I guess I just haven't had much timel...BUT. But now that the semester is well over I've got all the time in the world. Ok, so I did this for my little sister. She's such a sweetheart. Her cat's a pain though, but whatever. She loves him. This wasn't an assignment or anything. Just something fun to do. I sketched it out first in ballpoint pen. Then I transfered it to hardboard and painted it with acrylic washes. I really enjoyed doing this one.

Now that my Digital Illustration class is over, I'm going to just have fun with this blog. I'm really liking this semester at the moment. I'm taking an art history class that allows me to sketch all the time. It's like I have all the time in the world. A girl like me couldn't ask for me...except for maybe some food. Or an otter pop.

Pale-Illustration Friday

Ok, so using the weekly topic from Illustration Friday I managed to pull this off for my digital illustration class. The topic was "Pale" and I decided to do an albino peacock because I think that they are beautiful. The first time I saw one I was 12 or 13 and I was captivated by it. I just thought it was gorgeous ad it happened to fit perfectly with the "pale" theme.

The assignment was to do an illustration in this kind of digital/linocut style and it was fun. I've never done anything like this before. I really enjoyed it though. I think the next time I do it I'll play around a bit more with different size brushes and and things like that but I do like how this illustration turned out. I also think that, when I get the chance, I'll play around with the colors a bit more on this piece. Overall, I think I could say that this isn't too bad.
